Wildcard Wednesday: “I’m back in the saddle again!”

Wildcard Wednesday hasn’t been very wildcard-ish lately. But, hey! History is fun. Here’s today’s dose of historical happenings:

-Scotland Yard was formed in London (1829)

-Gene Autry born (1907)

-The Yankees recorded 16 stolen bases and 13 walks, breaking the record for stolen bags in a single inning with six (1911)

-Washington Senator Walter Johnson won his 36th game (1913)

-The Tigers and Yankees set a nine-inning hits record with a combined 45. The Tigers won 19-10 (1928)

-Willie Mays made his famous over-the-shoulder catch (1954)

-The New York Giants played their last game at the Polo Grounds and lost to Pittsburgh, 9-1 (1957)

-Stan Musial played his last game and collected his 3,630th hit (1963)

Rookie Greg Maddux defeated the Phillies and his brother, Mike (1986)

-Don Mattingly hit his record sixth grand slam of the year (1987)

I’ve always thought that the famous Willie Mays catch was a little overrated. Maybe it’s just me. Here’s a video… judge for yourself.
