The Farm Boy Files is a feature designed to better acquaint ourselves with our Cubs prospects. Today’s profile is on Chris Carpenter.
The Arizona Fall League kicked off on Tuesday. I have some work to do if I am going to cover all the Cubs representatives there before it’s over, but I’m gonna try.
Basic Info: 6’4”, 214
Born December 26th, 1985 in Bryan, Ohio
Was selected by the Cubs in the third round of the 2008 draft
Stats: Chris spent most of the year in AA Tennessee, where he tossed 119.2 innings. He racked up 100 strikeouts to 48 walks to go with a 3.16 ERA and a .262 opponents batting average. He made 3 starts for triple-A Iowa, where he registered an ERA of 5.40 with 12 strikeouts and 9 walks.
Not to be confused with: THAT Chris Carpenter.
Scouting Report: Chris is a big, hard thrower and features a solid slider. He suffered from control problems early in his career and in college, but has made strides in overcoming them the last year or so. He may eventually be destined for the bullpen depending on his development of a third pitch. According to Vineline magazine, he is among the best in the Cubs system in mechanics, poise, and make up. Baseball America ranks him among the Cubs top 10 prospects.
